Casual Cool for New York Fashion Week

new york fashion street style outfit

With New York fashion week just around the corner (in less than a week), there are sure to be a number of men taking formality to a more comfortable and casual approach this season. But casual doesn't mean pairing a t-shirt and jeans with sneakers. Unless you're a model, you guys know what I am referring to: a sleek detailed blazer, slim-fitted chinos, a wanting pair of shoes, and some diminutive amount of eye-catching accessories. Oh, and of course, a well groomed appearance.

Suits will never go out of style, and are sure worth an investment, yet there is something about making a casual look feel preppy and cool with a touch of your own personal style that makes fashion week far more enjoyable for every street style photographer. I personally will be looking out for some inspirational outfits to incorporate into my closet next week.

These looks can be found at Mr. Porter and East Dane.

London is Making Menswear a Stronger Capital

christopher raeburn mens spring 2015
While we all know most of the world has their eyes focused on the 2014 FIFA World Cup right now, the men’s spring 2015 season has also kicked off with London in case you forgot. And London designers seem to have a very similar connection to the World Cup this season. Some presented a more convincing and clean collection I wasn’t necessarily expecting to see, while others seemed to be struggling to prove London can be a place where designers like Saunders, Kane, and Anderson have already made a name for themselves.

Links a la Mode - Fashion Reality

Fashion Reality

This week, it took me a long, long time to curate the links, not because of lack of quality, but because there were so many interesting topics to explore. Look Sharp Sconnie, let her facial hair grow to make a point about femininity and documented it beautifully. Vic Styles pondered if you wear the same clothes, can you be stylish? My Fashion S/ash Life found some remarkably stylish gents. And Pupuren discussed the phenomenon of photographing oneself, how one's face changes. (I know this from experience). We may put a face on for the digital world, but there are always a few brave enough to take off the mask.

A New Modernity at Chanel and Dior's Resort 2015

christian dior and resort 2015 show

This season, cruise (or resort) collections have become sort of a relaxing vacation for the press; on Saturday, some of the top fashion influencers will be flying to Monaco to see Louis Vuitton debut its cruise collection. And without a doubt, Dior and Chanel have inaugurated the 2015 Resort season with some noteworthy collections that defined the freedom and lifestyle of women today in their own distinctive manners.

Honey-Glazed Chipotle, Chicken Wings

honey chipotle chicken wings

I’ve always had an exquisite appetite for food, and an enthusiasm to learn as much as I can about culinary as I do in fashion. In comes to mind that both are Art related somehow, are they not? In fashion, accessories are la crème de la crème in any outfit – they describe and vision a personality. In culinary, the combination of spices and herbs is what a chef or region is known by – that’s what divides a restaurant from one another. But I don’t say all this to tell you that I’m another expert chef who knows it all, but I sure am a follower who enjoys cooking a good meal like these honey-glazed chipotle, chicken wings coated for a delightful mixture of sweetness and spiciness.

Daniela D'Amico, an Emerging Print Designer Worth Noticing

daniela damico spring 2014 collection

I recently had the pleasure to meet and chat with Daniela D’Amico, a new upcoming London women’s wear designer who just launched her own label this year. Making a successful career inside the fashion industry is a dream not all designers can achieve overnight. But with intense hard work and dedication, the possibilities are many. And Ms. D’Amico is one of many other designers who have one goal in mind: making their name (that being through clothes) known all over the world.

Having studied and graduated from the prestigious London College of Fashion and Chelsea College of Art, and worked for a very popular designer, she’s now gradually working on making her own masculine silhouettes with a touch of feminine prints a signature of her brand. She was very kind to share some experiences she’s gone through as she’s still developing her brand, finding an identity in the fashion industry, and about her spring 2014 debut collection.

Bonobos - The Online Menswear Destination

bonobos warrior giveaway clothes

Online shopping today for men can be one of the easiest yet time consuming methods of shopping for clothes, especially when the size you ordered doesn’t fit or look good as you might have thought it would. And even worse is when the clothes you were counting for an event will have to be delayed because of return shipping and refunds. It’s a stress no one needs. Therefore, Bonobos – an online destination menswear retail site – has dedicated and focused on creating great-fitting clothes that make the shopping experience for men painless.

Fashion News: Designer Collaborations, and More

marisssa webb and roland mouret
From left: Designers, Marissa Webb and Roland Mouret.

Marissa Webb seems to be one New York designer who just landed one her most important yet riskiest jobs of her career that could take her to the top (not that she hasn’t already) of the fashion industry. Just this week, she was announced as the new creative director of Banana Republic. The profits at Republic haven’t been all that sweet for quite a long time. And to be honest, I tend to forget the brand still exists when you have other mega retailers like Express, H&M, and Zara capturing all the attention. The brand does need a major renovation, and Marissa Webb seems to be the ideal person to do the job investors are looking forward to seeing: attention, uniqueness, and money.

Resort 2014 Designer Collections Worth Looking At

The South is probably the most conservative of all states to savor a good dose of fashion. As you may already know, most designers have already presented their newest Resort 2014 collections that are now available in most retail stores.

I have come to the point of analyzing several collections most women here could come to an agreement with me - in the deep South - that the following collections are perhaps a win for their closet. Having a great knowledge for fashion here is not necessarily needed as it would for a designer (runway) collection. The main goal of a resort collection is to really, short and simple, see what pieces sell the fastest, and what pieces stay on the floor the longest. It can become quite a stressful time, since most retailers want to see profit and clothes selling and selling.

Most designers have to let go of their artistic (couture) abilities and turn on their marketing skills for resort. All customers want here is easy, luxurious, no drama pieces to wear any season or occasion. Yes, it can be quite challenging for some, but as long as most of the resort collections sell out, all is fine.

Below are just a few of the resort collections, who in my opinion, think have a potential of connecting with many customers, or simply sell out pretty good.

Prabal Gurung Resort 2014 Prints

Vibe: Sophisticated Geometric Prints.

Prabal Gurung has got a big win in this collection. This is what most women seek in a resort collection: something that has the designers elements (prints for Prabal) in an outfit and feels appropriate to wear for any occasion. His talent for designing incredible works of art keeps growing as the seasons pass, making him a more recognizable international designer for many. Prabal Gurung is a must have for Resort 2014. A great piece to add to your next summer wardrobe is the printed leather trench coat for those chilly and rainy days. Simply hot.

A Denim Jacket Is Never out of Season

mens denim layering basics

While spring may have arrived, and the sun begun to warm up the days, it doesn’t mean it’s still time to incorporate your tank tops and denim-cut shorts into your looks. The truth is the weather is still in between – cold in the morning, hot in the day, and back again to cold at night – a time that doesn’t allow one to wear lesser clothes unless you’re somewhere in the Caribbean or Miami right now.

7 Style Guidelines To Look Your Best For Any Special Occasion

editorial of men in fitted suits
Photo: GQ Italia

April is a month where most high school girls are prepping up for their so desired prom event. Most of them are running around like psychos searching for the perfect dress to put them on the so recalled “Best Dress List," and keeping extreme diets; at least this is what one can come across in the South.

For guys, it’s a whole different situation. Just as the perfect dress makes a girl sparkle, a well fitted suit gives authority to a man. It’s not about “Hey, I’ll just grab this suit and wear it.” Yes, it may take some time and money to find that single suit that fits like a glove, but the time will be well worth everything, because nothing says masculine than a man in a fitted suit.

What Do Prada, Gucci, and Versace Have in Common?

gucci womens fall 2014 dresses

Quiet. Sensual. Commercial. It was what these designers had in mind this season. Prada, Gucci, and Versace may be one of the most outspoken labels in Milan, but what they brought to Milan’s fall 2014 fashion week this time was softer and savvy compared to their own more rigid signature styles. They imbued the same mood, just in a different character.

Staying Modern for Carolina Herrera and Donna Karan

carolina herrera fall 2014

It is no secret that Carolina Herrera’s collections are always a reflection of herself – clothes are what she’d wear. But over the past few seasons, I’ve felt the designer beginning to look more into the future. Youth is the market today, which is something she’s achieving with class. And I love how diligently she’s opening a place for young girls of society to wear her clothes.

Clothes for Grown-Ups

victoria beckham fall 2014

I believe there’s nothing better than beginning your Sunday morning with your husband, David Beckham, and four beautiful kids, sitting front row to support mommy. Victoria Beckham seemed to have it all. The entire Beckham family, and a collection filled with clean and long silhouettes.

Just a Dose of Drama

prabal gurung fall 2014

A streaker crashes Prabal Gurung’s fall 2014 collection. Editors are still wondering if it’s worth making it to Alexander Wang’s Brooklyn show; I’m curious to know what Anna Wintour took. These were just some of the stories we were hearing everywhere going to some of the top designers shows. But I never even gave a dime for what the rest were commenting. I was more focused witnessing the events occurring at Saturday’s presentations.

So, where do we begin?

Day 2: Designers Began Placing Signatures

jason wu fall 2014

Have you not noticed that as New York keeps adding more shows to the day, it only gets more luxurious and distinguished? You start to see designers creating what fashion is all about. Day one in particular seemed to be ultra-commercial compared to some of today’s collections that will only get better come Saturday.

This morning in general, I started off the day enjoying a wonderful Starbucks coffee I’ll probably end up picking up for the rest of the month to fill me with energy. I know I’m not going to be the only one consuming caffeine to stay awake from the long hours of watching runway shows and writing afterwards at midnight. I don’t mind it at all, and so won’t my Starbucks nearby. And why? Simple. If you have not yet tuned in to fashion week, now it’s the time to settle for a week (or a month) that promises to bring a series of heated debates to the shows; Prabal Gurung, Altuzarra, and Wang will be the ones to inaugurate it tomorrow.

Keeping a Nice Balance

Mens fall wardrobe staples

As you may already realized, New York fashion week is currently being held. What does that mean? Time to take out your best items you've been wanting to show off for quite some time.

Personally, I'm not all about wild head-to-toe metallic prints. Sure, they are attention for street style photographers if you want to get noticed, but I prefer balance. Nothing says better than a well dressed man with confidence who knows how to keep a trendy proportion between color and accessories.

I've been catching on the most recent menswear shows in New York, and as you know, I will have something bias to say about these collections soon. But for right now, I leave with a casually-formal collage I simply enjoyed putting together. Simplicity is sometimes even more luxurious.

Want to know where to get these items?
Burberry navy peacoat, J.Crew gingham shirt and dark green pants, A.P.C. leather boots, Valentino leather bracelet, and Ray-Ban sunglasses - All available at Mr. Porter.

Kenneth Cole leather buckled gloves and Coach bag, available online.

Day 1: More Space for Youth

nicholas k and richard chai fall 2014

Lately, there’s been a demand to fix the drama that has been going on over the past few years at New York fashion week. Oscar de la Renta was amongst the first to make news by cutting off half of people who made no sense in attending his show. The reason you invite press is so they can expose you in some shape or form. If not, why attend? Makes sense to me.

The Stars of Paris Men's Fashion

paris mens fall 2014 details
Close-ups (left to right): A graphic sweater from Raf Simons; a red sequined striped dinner jacket from Saint Laurent; appliqué navy shirt and white/blue sneakers from Lanvin.

It can often be stated that Paris is the city of lights. But you could also agree that it is one of the most intriguing fashion capitals in the world – particularly what concerns Paris men’s fashion week. It’s not just about another well fitted suit or coat designers present here. Innovation and creativity explodes (and are often risky), which make these collections even more exciting to watch. And even though designers today focus more on marketing their brands worldwide, it is the ones who present at Paris who understand designer clothes are really meant to evoke emotion, art, personality, and luxury in what you wear; in other words, special clothes that make you stand out.

Raf Simons and Saint Laurent are perhaps one of the two biggest highlights of Paris. For the most part, I believe it has to do with the controversy these two rivals create. One’s more about emotions. The other more about hardcore personality.

Milan Men's Fall 2014 Designers Search for Youth

salvatore ferragamo and canali mens 2014

Milan men’s wear shows seem to be making youth part of a lifestyle. Whether it’d be in vivid tailored suits or sportswear, there were more than few designers this time who proposed young men – casual or dapper - fresh ideas for next fall 2014.

At Salvatore Ferragamo, creative director, Massimiliano Giornetti, left the sportswear aside and returned back to the roots of the brand: dandy tailored clothes in luxurious fabrics and textures. The only problem is they came with certain defects.

It looks like Tomas Maier keeps adding high records to the Bottega Veneta menswear label. Think about a lazy afternoon weekend where all you really want to wear is a pair of jogging pants, sweatshirt or Henley, and a nice pair of sneakers. Well, that’s exactly what went on at Bottega Veneta’s presentation Sunday morning. Except, being Maier, he elevated it to the next level. Turning that slacker into the most stylish and ultra luxe gentleman he is.

dolce gabbana mens fall 2014

At Dolce and Gabbana, the duo came out with a Norman inspired theme. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have been playing it safe with their Sicilian inspired themes over the last couple of seasons. And I’ve been a fan of this brand for quite some time, but for some particular reason, I felt this was not their season. They came up with beautiful prints – such as the Norman Kings that were sent out at the beginning of the runway – but it is the loosely fitted silhouettes that are not working if you understand. Half of the collection centered on thick embroidery and relaxed forms, but thankfully the other half was more reminiscent.

chanel spring 2014 colorful outfits

Give Karl Lagerfeld a paintbrush and he’ll probably laugh at you. He doesn’t take art as serious as other designers are doing in their collections. In fact, he injects irony like he did at his Chanel spring 2014 collection; he took modern art and developed it into a chic fashion statement. The setting of the show – an art gallery - consisted of 75 fake art pieces Mr. Lagerfeld proudly stated he did them over the summer. Well, those oversized art pieces weren’t made by him, but you get the idea – he specifically instructed how he wanted it to be done. He must have been the only designer who had fun over the break, because these clothes were nothing but fun pieces of art that were wearable or fit for your salon.

Etro is best known for its signature paisley prints. Last season, prints seemed off for this label; they were just not catchy. But this season Veronica Etro was inspired by her grandmother’s country home. They say that sometimes a family run business serves best if inspiration is taken from a relative’s history, and being grandmother the subject, this collection worked very well.

It is no secret that American designers have one of the best luxury sportswear aesthetics women want. Something European designers envy when it comes to loosening naturally in such a manner. Americans love the mix of casualty, semi-formal, and luxury when dressing up, and American designers understand that demand very well; there was such a minimalistic approach designers took this time with sportswear. And even though we tend to focus more on international designers at the end, there were fascinating pieces some designers offered for next season at New York Fashion Week spring 2014 that proved to be on top of the league.

Spring 2014 Reviews: Victoria Beckham, Derek Lam, and More

Victoria Beckham Spring 2014

Victoria Beckham really stepped it up this season. She was looking for a boyish sportswear tailoring look, and she made it look flawlessly chic. Other designers have really gone for the tomboy 90s looks, but not her. There were so many special pieces in this collection that separated her from other designers themes that looked overt (I could name several now). Fashion is not meant for everyone – not even for celebrities who get criticized harshly when in a collaboration – but Victoria Beckham is not a celebrity anymore, she’s a designer who has earned the respect of many.

She’s gaining confidence (and a good one) in outerwear. She began her show with a relaxed black and white ruffled top and cropped pants (these contained a very sharp tailoring) paired over a crispy white rounded shoulder suit jacket. There was only one white baseball jacket she showed – detailed with black cuffs and collar, and transparent sheer sleeves – that was breathtaking. Her sleeveless suit vests were also noteworthy. Yes, it was only a small percentage of outerwear, but enough to go for one (or two in another color).

Now, if there was anything that assured Victoria Beckham’s designer aesthetics for details and high-tech fabric combos were the following: her midi skirts slashed to show details of pleats underneath (an interesting way to show creativity on layering), and her laser-cut inverted triangles – in fuchsia and white - etched on shirts. Beckham is better known for her immaculate glove-fitted dresses every women dreams of, but this new soft tailoring collection sure does have another run for the money. Oh, and if you wondered how Mrs. Beckham dressed for her applause, she wore a white shirt with her cropped blacked pants. So posh.

derek lam spring 2014 dresses

Derek Lam is a designer who has been designing clothes for women. Sounds obvious, but that’s the only thing that comes to mind when you see his collections. His graphic checked prints were simply easy on the eye. That is what women want. Luxury clothes that looks effortless and gorgeous. There were some that may have not loved this collection, being that Mr. Lam designs for a more mature lady. But for the woman who has the opportunity to encounter with a Derek Lam piece, she sure has come across a beautiful treasure.

He had lots to offer for next spring 2014; his color-block numbers from last season have been a sensation. His belted coats – washed gray and blue denim – may have looked minimal, but at a close-up you could appreciate all its details. Highly structured raffia skirts (especially one in yellow) and dresses were luxurious for such a fabric. These is how we’d want our mature girls rocking something out, and for younger girls, those gladiator heels.

dkny spring 2014 women's

DKNY, Donna Karan’s youthful sister label, conveyed a good energy for next season. Sportswear was yet again the theme of Karan’s spring 2014 presentation. Honestly, there never seems to be an inspirational theme that focuses on each collection, but the cool sporty looks make up for the uncertain themes. It is a ready-to-wear line after all, and DKNY finds ways to make each season seem different.

Her vintage bandana prints were refreshing, while her denim fabrics – overalls and patchwork jeans – sent a 90s vibe that later affirmed with her sneaker looks and logo dresses. Her lavender and turquoise numbers projected much more girl power. One silk orange spaghetti strap dress Karlie Kloss wore seemed appropriate for a casual day to go shopping for some groceries.

dvf spring 2014 collection

Diane Von Furstenberg also had an “oasis” going on at her show. Her clothes never fail, are always marketed at fair prices and best of, are made for any type of curvy woman. We can tell she never thinks about clothes they way she wants them to be on skinny girls. Yes, thin models model her collections, but right away there are many options for women to choose from here.

There were selections of wilder prints to more tone down ones. She went from nice cropped tops to color-block and animal print gold buttoned denim shirts made for everyone. And her iconic wrap dresses updated to still look good on any woman.

The most important part of wearing a DVF piece is having fun in it, and that’s what some of her smiling and graceful models were projecting. This is why she is the president of the CFDA. She herself is her own muse, managing to look youthful in anything she wears at her age, and so should you in her designs. Maybe that’s why she had the queen of the runway, Naomi Campbell, confirm that in one short gold embroidered dress. Age has no limits at DVF.

Dior Homme's Spring 2014 Minimalist Approach

Day 4 of 5 Paris Men's Fashion Week

dior homme mens spring 2014 suits

Vibe: Doing Business at the Beach.

"Just think how you negotiate wearing a tuxedo on a beach," were part of Kris Van Assche's description for Dior Homme Spring 2014 menswear collection. "It's formality and informality: choice, chance, and lightness."

Making a color choice was very straightforward here. Red wine, blue, light gray, and black were the only options. Most of the collection became a repetition of either looks in shorts or slim trousers, suits or vests, and in either subtler leather patchworks, that made one reflect what could have been the perfect outfit to go on a negotiation. But what if you were to rewind back to the beginning of the collection and take a closer look at each individual outfit that could have appeared identical for a few seconds? Notice, the chance of choosing the same identical outfit could have just become quite difficult and interesting to think about. It was those small uncommon details that Dior has always been perfect and successful at making one ponder what is the difference about these two?

Vibe: Sophisticated Men in Graphic Chalk Marks.

Tomais Maier doesn't need much to describe about his cool sophisticated tailoring that has progressed so rapidly at Bottega Veneta. It seems the brand has turned from being just a young teenager to a man with exquisite taste in luxury. Its spring 2014 men's collection started off fresh and powerful with gray suits - tailored so easily fitted - that shifted into a series of white-chalked outlined suits that portrayed the detailed craftsmanship that goes into making such a suit. They had an illusion, as if the lapels were really sewn it, but if you could get closer you'd see it was only a well played tailoring outline trick. His white subtle button down shirts came with black graphic chalk marks that elevated the mood.

Christopher Bailey, creative officer of Burberry, gave us quite a surprise at his Burberry presentation Tuesday morning. London Menswear Fashion Week consisted of only three days worth of great innovative designers, but it wouldn't have felt enjoyable to finish one's final morning in London without such an artful collection like Burberry's. The transition from the Milan menswear calendar to London's may have played a factor in Bailey's theme, but no, it only moved the presentation to a much earlier date. Bailey knows how to influence the menswear market keenly well. The number of male celebrities, bloggers, and street stylists who have become a loyal customer to the brand fill the gap for the rest of us who want a piece of that ultra cool trenchcoat. Semi-length shirts brought a cool vibe in pleated numbers that resembled tuxedo shirts.

Runway Review| Victoria Beckham's Lengthy Sensuality

Victoria Beckham Fall 2013 Lengthy Sensuality

I can’t believe it has been about five years since Victoria Beckham first launched her eponymous line. As a fashion addict I’ve only had an understanding of her label for about two years. When I first heard of her collection, I can’t deny I thought it was going to be one of those dull celebrity collections with no significance to the real world of fashion.
